在大型農(nóng)場，蛋雞通常飼養(yǎng)在籠中。由于缺乏運(yùn)動(dòng)，家禽容易患上骨質(zhì)疏松癥，由此導(dǎo)致的死亡占到家禽總死亡的20%-35%。體外實(shí)驗(yàn)顯示，脂肪酸特別是Ω-3不飽和脂肪酸能促進(jìn)骨骼對(duì)礦物質(zhì)的吸收，從而增加骨密度。
Ω-3促進(jìn)骨骼代謝的機(jī)理之一是改變花生四烯酸類的產(chǎn)生，特別是前列腺素PG。PG激素類是由多不飽和脂肪酸轉(zhuǎn)化而來。[1]
在一項(xiàng)研究中，飼料中加入裂殖壺藻粉可以促進(jìn)蛋雞產(chǎn)蛋，并增加蛋黃中Ω-3的水平，降低Ω-6/Ω-3數(shù)值。[2]
